A Retainer Will Be Needed After Your Braces Have Been Removed

Posted on April 25, 2018

Each of your braces adjustments played an important role in altering the periodontal connective tissues that anchor your teeth in your gums. With consistent timing, the tension will eventually bring your teeth into their ideal orientation.

Once this has been achieved our orthodontist can remove your braces. However, there will still be some latent tension remaining in your periodontal sockets. If it’s not addressed, it could cause your teeth to relapse out of their ideal alignment.

Dr. Dipak Chudasama can provide most patients with a removable Hawley retainer. It is a common option for preventing relapse after braces have been removed. The oral appliance is essentially a custom-molded piece of oral acrylic that conforms to the shape of your mouth and interlocks with your teeth through series of strong wires.

Sometimes a fixed retainer is needed to hold a specific area in place. It more common for patients who needed traditional braces to correct a pronounced underbite or overbite. It is a strong metal band that will be cemented behind the teeth with a strong oral adhesive to help hold the teeth in the new position while any residual tension gradually dissipates.
